Things that weird me out about Argentina

I can be at a party and have several middle-class, educated people tell me that they are communists.

Political values are one thing, but complete disregard for empirical data that supports theory...holla back.

I don't get it. Are you saying that Communism has been empirically tested and failed at some point in history.

I'm no Communist (and neither am I Argentine), but I think you'll find that until this point in history there has never been a true Communist regime in effect at any time or place on this earth. Many have and do call themselves Communist regimes, but most would be laughed at by Marx.

Sorry if I missed your point, but I felt the need to say something if this indeed was what you were trying to say.

However, I doubt that many of the Argentines that have said they are Communis actually realize what I have said either :-)

I'll discuss it in person.

Fair enough. Hope you do the same with the Argentines that claim to be Communists. Perhaps you'll find out that, like you, they are quite often as misinformed as you are on a subject that they even claim to have a strong personal interest in!

That sounds awfully epistemologically arrogant to accuse me of being misinformed. If you weren't such a delightful person, I might be rather irked.

And why that might be? :D

Regardless, the imperfect approximations of those idyllic "true Communist regimes" that everyone got to read about in their intro political philoosphy courses in college failed miserably, and have taken their deserved place on the ash heap of history.

But hey, if people completely disconnected from reality, history, and the laws of Nature and of Nature's God enjoy the notion of perfecting the ash heap over discussion in cafes, I can't see how it really hurts anything.

It's surely far less hurtful than the millions killed in the name of various Communist "people's states" over the last century.

Just because Marx might "laugh" at them does not mean they cannot call themselves communists. And if everyone is "misinformed" about communism, perhaps it has a different meaning that we all understand, even though it varies from the original concept outlined by Marx.

Besides, the concept was based on predictions over time, and not necessarily inconsistent with the regimes that have existed.
